Abandoned by his mother at 2 months old, Qizai, whose name means 'the seventh son' was found as a weak and neglected cub in a nature reserve in Qingling Mountains in Central China.
Little is known about Qizaj's origins or his birth mom—but one thing that's certain is she was black and white. Qizaj is now the only brown panda in the world.
Qizaj was bullied by other pandas growing up (being different isn't easy for anybody!). But today he's thriving and rapidly becoming famous throughout the world.
Qizaj's brown-and-white coat is a bit of a mystery, given that his mother was the traditional black and white. Scientists speculate that a genetic mutation accounts for the difference.
Despite his difficult childhood, Qizaj today is happy, healthy, and well adjusted. Chinese experts are even hoping to find him a mate. Being able to study the appearance of any cubs he might father could help researchers uncover the mysteries behind Qizaj's unusual appearance.
In the meantime, Qizaj is enjoying a life of ease and plenty in China's Foping Panda Valley. Other pandas no longer steal his food.Qizaj even has his own personal caretaker, who wakes up at 6am every day just to make sure Qizaj has all the food he wants.
The famous panda now weighs a healthy 220 pounds, eating close to 44 pounds of bamboo every day.
'He is slower than the other pandas, but he is also cuter,' Qizai's keeper told Mail Online, describing the bear as a 'gentle, funny and adorable' animal.
