If not for the fortunate timing of a Good Samaritan, this sweet tuxedo kitty would likely still be chained up all by himself in the woods outside of Spring, TX—or worse.
Janet Zimmerman, a local animal rescuer, was searching the woods for a lost dog when she heard the nearby sounds of a cat crying.
"She tracked the sound down to some small trees and underbrush and was shocked by what she found," Copper's Cat Commune, a local cat-rescue group posted on Facebook. "There amidst some thorny branches or vines was a black and white cat … CHAINED TO A TREE."
The cat—practically a baby still, at only one year old—was chained to a tree with a padlock around his neck. "It was no accident," Zimmermann told local outlet ABC13. "Someone did this to him. Maybe as dog or animal bait. I was shocked — stunned."
Zimmerman rescued him on the spot. The cat, whom rescuers have named Forest, was unhurt by his ordeal — physically or emotionally. "He is super sweet and social," the cat rescue posted on its Facebook page.
Forest is now staying at a local animal clinic while volunteers from Copper's Cat Commune work to find him the perfect forever family. And, proving that you can't keep a good kitty down, the little sweetheart (who even has a heart for a nose!) is dispensing affection and cuddles to everyone he meets, clearly reveling in all the love and attention.
The rescue told The Dodo that they've already received several applications for his adoption, and a handful have been invited to meet Forest in purrson — which means that Forest is out of the woods and on his way to the life of comfort, cuddles, and love every kitty deserves!
