A single brush fire can kill thousands of animals and decimate an area's local wildlife population. But Freddie the tortoise is luckier than most. Things looked grim for Freddie after most of his shell was burned away in a Brazilian wildfire. But a dedicated group of Homer's Heroes known as the Animal Avengers came to Freddie's rescue—and created the world's first 3D printed shell for him.
"Freddie was the first tortoise in the world to receive a fully rebuilt hull and the first creature that we, as a newly formed group of animal rescuers, decided to help," said Designer Cicero Moraes, a member of the Sao Paulo-based volunteer group.A 3D computer image of Freddie's shell was constructed based on photographs that the group took of Freddie. The design was sent to dental surgeon Paulo Miamoto, who brought the design into real-world life with a 3D printer. As you can see, Freddie is happy as a clam in his new shell and enjoying some down time in a wildlife sanctuary. Well done, Avengers! To learn more about their work, click here.
