We here at HiHomer.com believe firmly that every animal matters, that every life is worth saving, and that no act of kindness is ever wasted. Beautiful case in point: this terrified female opossum spotted terrified and alone in front of a business in Grand Rapids, MI. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center posted her incredibly moving rescue story to their Facebook page.
According to the post, they believe this poor girl crawled in to find a safe place to escape a storm, but then got stuck once foot and auto traffic started picking up with morning rush hour.
"She just bowed her head and pretended she wasn't there."
If you've ever worked in animal rescue, then you've heard stories about the cruel ways people sometimes treat animals--especially opossums, who many people associate with rats (although they're marsupials--like kangaroos!--not rodents). In fairness, sometimes people are so afraid of approaching a wild animal that they're reluctant to help. But, fortunately for this sweet girl, a kind human noticed her plight and called the Wildlife Rehab Center for help.
As luck would have it, one of the center's opossum specialists was on call and able to arrive quickly on the scene. After a quick exam--and discovering a litter of babies in this mama possum's pouch!--she was able to release the opossum into a safe, quiet area, with all the grass and silence opossums crave.
Like most of us, all she needed was a furiendly hand! :)
Many thanks to our friends at TheDodo.com for first sharing this story. Be sure to check out their adorable video of a dog adopting a litter of possums and becoming their substitute mom!
