Too many dogs run out of time in shelters—but here's the story of one pup who was given all the time he needed to find his happy ending at last. Chester the pit bull waited nearly 5 years at the North Fork Animal Welfare League, in Long Island, New York for his forever humans to show up. At only 6 years old, he'd lived in the shelter most of his life.
Day after day, potential adopters came and looked. And, day after day, they went home with other dogs—leaving sweet Chester behind. This despite the fact that all that time in a shelter environment hadn't changed Chester's sweet, outgoing, loving temperament one bit. Sometimes it's just hard for a pit bull to get a fair shake.
Fortunately for Chester, the volunteers who knew him best had infinite patience and a bit of creativity. One day, a shelter worker posed Chester with the poster you see below.
The image quickly went viral on Facebook and was shared over 20,000 times. The shelter received inquiries from far-away states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Michigan and Oregon.
Chester's touching note finished with: "I promise to be good and love my new family. Please maybe you are new family. I sit and wait for you to come."
The gambit worked. Within two days, Chester had found a family of his own. Dana and Adi Or and their two boys Aidan and Brandon came into the shelter to meet Chester and immediately clicked with the dog.
Today, Chester spends his days cuddling with his new family, sleeping on his brother's bed, hanging with his new dad, and being showered with all the love he always craved. It may have taken five years, but Chester finally got the home that he—and every other dog—deserves.
