Russia's Optina Monastery isn't only a refuge for its human religious devotees--it's also a sanctuary for 10 working cats who receive shelter, food, veterinary care, and love in exchange for their pest-control skills. And, as this video shows, they've integrated themselves fully into the monastery's daily rituals. Every day, one of the monks makes a complete circle of the property to dispense sacred blessings--a ritual hundreds of years old. Perhaps in earlier times the monks observed this rite in solitude, but today a phalanx of kitties accompanies the appointed monk on his rounds. We don't claim to know much about Russian Orthodox ceremonies, but we'll admit that we find this one purrfectly charming and deeply moving--and we know you will, too!
